Ai no Uta

I was just thinking.. I usually leave dorama reviews to iceblueaya, since we watch some of the same dramas….perhaps we both don’t really share much of the same tastes in dramas. But I do know most of what she speaks about when she speaks about dramas sometimes. She just has a policies of waiting until the entire drama finish airing to watch the entire thing. So we recc each other, or I try to get her to watch the dramas I watched. She would watch the more school drama stuff while I prefer the working dramas.. meaning where the characters are all adults and working in jobs.

Anyhow this review is going to be kinda old since Ai no Uta (Love Song) came out in 2005. It is a ten episode family drama, starring Kanno Miho and Tamaki Koji. I have been a bit more interested in Kanno Miho, since she’s in the new Hataraki Man..which I have previews raws for.. but still is waiting for subs so I can curl up with it.

Back to Ai no Uta, this is a pretty funny, touching and sweet dramas. There are poignent moments where you want to cry and others where you would want to chuckle. It feels like watching Kimi wa Petto all over again.

Kanno Miho’s character is this gloomy girl named Matsuda Yoko – who attempts suicide after rationalizing that her life was a complete waste, after her mother gave birth to her and subsequently neglects her, her entire childhood. Pretty sad stuff.. I wonder if Japan has child service. – She tries to commit suicide, by jumping off a bridge in hopes of drowning and survived. Walking into a small restaurant where Tamaki Koji (Kataoka Yuji) was drinking with his two friends… she faints and is brought to the hospital. Oh one of Tamaki’s friends in this drama is Narimiya Hiroki who is Nobu in Nana 1 and Nana 2.

At the hospital, when she wakes up, she realizes that she can pretend to have amnesia, so that she can forget her past. Because of a desire to help her, Tamaki Koji lets her stay with him and his family. In this drama Tamaki plays a widowed police officer with three kids and a dog. Yokko stays with them and is in the process renamed Ai aka Ai-chan or Ai-san. Ai meaning love in kanji or Chinese.

So to not drag on this post, Ai falls in love with Koji among other things that occur in the drama.. which rounded out the drama making it funny, sad or nostalgic. The ending was kinda a let down, because it is not apparent that Koji and Ai get married or not. You also never got to see what happened with Ai’s abusive mother. Still this drama is really neat because of some moments in the drama, such as the episode where Ai starts to prepare bento boxes for the family.. or when she got her own room among other nice incidents in the drama.

Well, not entirely. I usually watch dramas with JE actors first, and most of these turn out to be school dramas. I have to wait for the entire thing to come out because my harddrive don’t have enough space.. I’m keeping up with Yuukan Club though.
