Some thoughts and examination of gender issues thru videos..

October 26, 2010 1 comment

Lately I have been on such a Grasshopper listening binge.. if you see my tweets, and hear my sister complaining about how much links I throw on. But FYI, Grasshopper is a Cantonese pop trio, who sings a lot of sappy romance songs. I grew up with listening them when they were students of the late and great Anita Mui. But I digress..

What promoted this entry is just a need to show a slew of Youtube videos.. and raise questions on gender thoughts…

While you don’t need to understand the video, the song is basically on how easy it it is for woman to be emotional, while to be a man is something of strength, so Grasshoppers were singing of this desire to be born a woman, with men kissing fanservice thrown in. That I see a lot of when my friend Aya shows pictures of Japanese concert fanservice.  Fanservice for men and woman.. there’s also half naked woman in this clip. Brings to mind another video on DJ Ozma, and Kohaku several years ago.

Now take a look on the opposite side, with Hikki’s You Make Me Want to be a Man. Her inspiration for writing this though was, born of wanting to deal with her martial issues at the time. Leading to the issues of how gender issues between men and woman are different.

Lastly, there is Haruna Ai… I always find her to be a great Japanese celebrity example of crossing the barrier between gender reassignment, though I am not sure about her gaining a boyfriend. At times it boggles the mind of how confident she appears to be, she’s always wearing these outfits, and how she acts as a celebrity to earn money for her surgery.

This following video is when she went to the Philippines and visited the CPDRC prison there. The warden is saying what type of prisoners are there, a tour thru the facilities, then a look at the prisoners. Finally the video ends on 700 prisoners following after Haruna Ai in a dance.

So then gender thoughts…. it is a pretty interesting thought to think about, and you see either through song, or an example of what makes a desire of this either figuratively or literally.

Twitter Follow Friday. ^_^

October 18, 2010 Leave a comment

I am piggy backing on @mbeasi‘s nifty blogging things at this moment. The post is quite late… >_<  So I am going to do a personal roll call for people’s tweets that has recently within the past two months led me to actually go and learn something more about a personalized favorite subject. Whether it is in Japanese culture relevancy, or manga or just all around coolness factor, as often reading these Tweets can perk up a day on the net.

@michaelpinto – He tweets with categories that disseminates Twitter even more into richer metadata. There’s not a lot of subjects I can really gleam from fanboy.com, but on the occasional posting about these lesser known Japanese works, technology and gadget news. I find myself sometimes mentally fangirling. ^_^

@hisuiRT– Sarcastic and witty, hisuiRT has became a pretty nifty person to speak to on Twitter. He tweets a lot about specific anime/manga/hobby topics. What I definitely like from his tweets is the personality and probably multiple-facted quirks you can get him to talk to you about. He is one half of Reverse Thieves and RT are running a anime Secret Santa at this moment.

@debaoki -Continually tweeting about new manga, or her wine trips, she is often the person to definitely retweet if you wan to learn about manga news/industry in the United States. She is immensely knowledgeable about gathering a niche focus group together, and continually I see her as a center person to refer back on. She writes for About.com.

@edsizemore -As a networking strong presence for specific manga/comic reviews, that he champions. There is his tweets, and podcasts. His tweets are often insightful, and sometimes though provoking. I look forward to reading his varied reactions to graphic novels. He writes as part of Comics worth reading.

@yuricon – She’s always mentions various topics that are either on industry, social media, graphic novels news, or LGBT rights relevance. I find her tweets educational and definitely re-tweet-able. She writes pro-yuri and female liberalism blog entries on Okazu.

So reading this list, you may or may not follow these people… but since they tweet consistently and frequently on the net on topics that I find quite interesting, I definitely find their tweets consistently something to follow up on.

3 Things Shoujo…

October 15, 2010 3 comments

Not sure if it is as relevant for the fact that it is not posted on a Thursday, but on a Friday, but I figure this might be a bit fun, and a bit of a breaker from still updating about NYCC/NYAF on JLHLS and Anime Diet. I am not posting hyperlinks to my press, since eventually the posts I will write for those presses… will come out on Twitter.

Since I have been on a kick with reading a lot of Shoujo flavor manga from the library, my reading choices.. are not as recent or as old as other titles that I have been seeing. I am writing my list in terms of the manga I had finished devouring vs. the manga that I am still continuing to read.. But this idea for writing this type of blog is from Manga Bookshelf – Melinda Beasi’s idea, since I see other manga blogs I read also follow suit.

3 Current Faves

Monkey High
(Shoujo Beat) by Shouko Akira. In a seemingly opposites attract scenario, I am quite curious to see what will happen in this high school romance, between a cool beautiful girl and an unassuming monkey boy.

High School Debut (Shoujo Beat) by Kazune Kawahara. Haruna is a tomboy female who is determined to get a boyfriend upon getting to high school. She meets her ideal in Yoh. So what is this seemingly naive girl going to do against anyone who disapproves of her relationship?

Kimi ni Todoke (Viz) by Karuho Shiina. Sawako is feared by everyone in her class. She is a very shy girl, but eventually becomes attracted to Kazehaya, a very well liked boy in her class. I squee when I read of their relationship, god the blushing both are.. is just sooo innocent, but at times I kinda wonder about similarities with Kareshi Kanojo no Jijo!

3 Past Faves

The Gentleman’s Alliance Cross (Shoujo Beat) by Arina Tanemura. Haine, has to try to win the affection of Shizumasa Togu and move beyond her dark sad past. I really enjoy reading this series, and finding out what was what. The artwork is something I really like, and find very pretty, even though though to keep track of all the characters was at some point, confusing. It is not as bad as flipping thru some other titles I have seen though.

Wild Ones
(Shoujo Beat) by Kiyo Fujiwara. Meet Sachie who is the granddaughter of a Yakuza clan’s head. She gets assigned a caretaker by Rakuto. Of course as with any shoujo title, they fall for each other. I really enjoy the desings of this series.

Solanin (Viz)by Inio Asano is a coming of age story, that is quite bittersweet, and self-realizing. Is this considered to be a shoujo title, not sure, but with the mention of a female that is slice of life, from the nomral shoujo fluff I see. I find that the depth this story creates, leads to a good cry and an experience.
