Movie Review of Sky Crawlers

December 13, 2008 4 comments

After promotions and plugs on Anime News Network, Japanator… this news piled up on my RSS feeds of Google Reader until I found out about this event on Thursday evening. On a whim I decided to go to the screening of Mamoru Oshii’s new animated movie: The Sky Crawlers スカイ・クロラ. None of my friends actually wanted to go, but I was able to meet up with Omo who was there with his friend. I also saw Rym from GeekNights as well. This event was held at the Walter Reade Theater… which was next to Julliard, getting there was quite annoying with the scaffolding. Read more…

Ghost in the Shell 2.0

June 9, 2008 Leave a comment

Wow got the news from ANN, just about now and yep.. Ghost in the Shell is being released again! A treatment that is similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion 1.0. The entire movie is going to be digitized and the soundtrack is going to be done over. Can’t wait to hear the soundtrack. Was ecstatic over the beauty of Innocence, so hearing the remastered one for Ghost in the Shell is going to be phenomenal!

This was a movie I watched and enjoyed, just wished that there was a more happer ending with Makoto and Batou..

I just got the limited 4-disc edition DVD import as this latest Studio Ghibli DVD was released on July 4. This is the first movie directed by Hayao Goro, Hayao Miyzaki’s estranged son and to say that I was quite disappointed in the movie.

Edit: I quickly sold my copy to BookOff… and wipe my hands off to find this…

Hate to spoil American viewers, but blah..

Meet the Robinsons

This is the latest Disney CGI release on a representation of the future. The premises for this movie is of Louis, an orphan genius inventor who tries to remember his past in seeing his mother. Because of a science fair mishap, Wilbur came from the future to assist Louis fix it and ensures that his own future is not different. However, a villain from the future also plot to get revenge on his past against Louis.

Louis gets into the future and meets Wilbur’s large eccentric extended family and learns how to grow up in the process. What I liked about this movie was the character development of Louis, or Cornelius, while the movie was kinda confusing in some parts, like with the invention’s own desires for a warped world, this is a good family film.

Curse of the Golden Flower

December 25, 2006 Leave a comment

Happy Holidays to people and their families. Anyhow I went and caught a showing of this film and I have to say, it’s an excellent film. Having gone with a close friend, he underestimated the audience for seeing this movie. The film was relatively short, unlike Hero which was longer. This movie centered on the royal family during the Tang Dynasty with a theme of patriarical heriarchy. The conclusion was not something my friend liked. I have to say that it is the norm for Zhang Yimou’s films.

The visual depictions of Tang’s royal palace, like the multi-color glass colums and costuming is spectacular. The much work and detailed on every gown of Gong Li as Empress Phoenix is amazing and the way she acted her role was fabulous. I was impressed with details of the costumes, such as the weight of the crown Gong Li wore in one scene as with the various armors that Chow Yeun Fat and Jay Chou must don.

I would be very surprised if this movie is not nominated for an Oscar as with winning a slew of Hong Kong film awards. The cast is certainly a big drawer… Gong Li, Chow Yeun Fat and Jay Chou.

I was not impressed with the action, but given that this is a drawer for the American movie crowd, I would say there is a need for action with the fake blood, after the skeptism of my friend.
