It has been while since you have left, after all this year is your 8th anniversary, since your ultimate departure from life. April 1, what a damn day of recollections. Of course this is told from a EST time, since the demise location is in Hong Kong. So I can only imagine of some moments of remembrances for you held in Hong Kong. All right time does go on, but as a fan just watching moments of your career, just has me thinking of good and bad times. Leslie Cheung (張國榮).
He’s known as as a singer and an actor, so if you pay attention to Hong Kong Cinema as I grew up with. Leslie has been a big part of my viewing pleasure as I grew up. For lots of westerner audience, they may have seen him in Farewell My Concubine or Temptress Moon, since I know them as having English releases.
There’s just so many great songs that Leslie have produced, but since I have been on a bit of a schedule.. just leave up this clip. There’s English subs for the parts when he speaks, but overall his singing is in Cantonese. This is from a 1997 concert he did, with two songs. “When the Wind Blows.” and “This Life”
Before I get into the song aspect, what is the inspiration of this post.. mostly because of the post and trailer that I saw here.
I forgot that Donnie Yen was going to be in a movie sequel of Fist Of Fury… I did see in an interview that he is a sincere fan of Bruce Lee.. just like Stephen Chow is. So here’s several prior initial impressions I have of Fist Of Legend.
- I really am not a fan of the period.Give me a contemporary Hong Kong movie piece but definitely post-Manchu Dynasty, and pre-Communist era. I probably won’t see this movie
- Action gets really boring.
- This is a very nationalistic Chinese message, nothing is wrong with that..just a lot of things I don’t want to think much about.
Fist of Fury is an original movie portrayed by Bruce Lee on Chen Zhen’s struggle for upholding the name of his dojo. This is a movie portrayed by Bruce Li, Jackie Chen and Jet Li, but if you look on the television drama, I can’t help but remember Donnie Yen’s initial potrayal of Chen Zhen in an ATV production. He is actually singing the drama’s theme song. So from what I can gather, Fist of Legend is a sequel of Fist of Fury the ATV television version.
Another random part I think about Fist of Fury is Stephen Chow’s parody of it, in his movie King of Comedy, the Fist of Fury reference comes in around 6:11.
Lately I have been on such a Grasshopper listening binge.. if you see my tweets, and hear my sister complaining about how much links I throw on. But FYI, Grasshopper is a Cantonese pop trio, who sings a lot of sappy romance songs. I grew up with listening them when they were students of the late and great Anita Mui. But I digress..
What promoted this entry is just a need to show a slew of Youtube videos.. and raise questions on gender thoughts…
While you don’t need to understand the video, the song is basically on how easy it it is for woman to be emotional, while to be a man is something of strength, so Grasshoppers were singing of this desire to be born a woman, with men kissing fanservice thrown in. That I see a lot of when my friend Aya shows pictures of Japanese concert fanservice. Fanservice for men and woman.. there’s also half naked woman in this clip. Brings to mind another video on DJ Ozma, and Kohaku several years ago.
Now take a look on the opposite side, with Hikki’s You Make Me Want to be a Man. Her inspiration for writing this though was, born of wanting to deal with her martial issues at the time. Leading to the issues of how gender issues between men and woman are different.
Lastly, there is Haruna Ai… I always find her to be a great Japanese celebrity example of crossing the barrier between gender reassignment, though I am not sure about her gaining a boyfriend. At times it boggles the mind of how confident she appears to be, she’s always wearing these outfits, and how she acts as a celebrity to earn money for her surgery.
This following video is when she went to the Philippines and visited the CPDRC prison there. The warden is saying what type of prisoners are there, a tour thru the facilities, then a look at the prisoners. Finally the video ends on 700 prisoners following after Haruna Ai in a dance.
So then gender thoughts…. it is a pretty interesting thought to think about, and you see either through song, or an example of what makes a desire of this either figuratively or literally.
