Shoujo Cliche – The Other Man (Round Robin)

June 30, 2008 Leave a comment

I decided to stick out of this topic, because I wonder if I am beating the dead horse. I actually don’t like this cliche at all and always feel sorry for the other man, probably being by himself or getting stuck with a sudden random character, such as the case of Yuki in Fruits Basket. Hence one of my mottos is to always watch something that doesn’t really have this situation. Too messy… I prefer OTP’s after all.

The Mechanics of Rape Fantasies

June 28, 2008 11 comments

This is the third round of the Round Robin and a double serving. I figure I’ll write on this prompt first and probably stay out of the second prompt. I promise that I will upload Rated R pictures…as well as write about things I am comfortable in confiding, I’ll probably be jumping all over the place. I’ll try and focus on the angle of hentai portrayal of women and my thoughts. Warning for the inclusion of adults only links, so do not click if you’re underage or not mature enough; if there’s anyone that knows me in real life and reads this post, then this is just me waxing prose on what I occasionally watch or play video games on.

What are your thoughts on rape fantasies? What’s the logic and appeal
behind indulging in rape fantasies? Do you have rape fantasies? Do you
find them acceptable? For this topic, there are several angles form
which you can address this prompt. While others
might wish to address the hentai genre and talk about their thoughts
on the depiction of women and sex in hentai [violence, tentacles,
bondage, etc]. Please note that this is going to be one of the most
challenging topics to write about because it’s so explosive and
bounded by taboo. These issues are ones that people would normally not
feel comfortable discussing in a public space.

Otaku Round-Robin followup

June 16, 2008 3 comments

This is a follow up to an aspect in my previous Otaku post

I also seem to think that otaku is a male term with masculine expectations of fanservices, so I use the term fujoshi in it’s place…

Otaku thoughts or should I say fujoshi?

June 15, 2008 19 comments

Ahh the next round of the Round Robin! Yay!!! So here’s the prompt and my answer following it.

Give your own definition of an “otaku”. Do you consider yourself an
otaku [be honest, try to avoid hypocrisy]? What impressions do you
hold towards an otaku [positive/ negative/ ambivalent]? What issues/
insecurities do you perceive in them? Can you empathize with their
insecurities? Do you personally think it’s acceptable to be an otaku?
Do you think people should care about being labeled an otaku? Do you
think that they are a product of society?

And finally: Are you sure you’re not confusing your own insecurities
and self-loathing with your antagonism towards an otaku?

The Rabbit Hole: Anime and Escapism

May 30, 2008 15 comments

First topic of discussion in the round robin..is underway. I wrote this topic as a draft yesterday and I was a little too chicken to post it, so imagine my surprise to see the other responses to it today. Thanks to itsubun to organizing this massive group effort. Now this post would be answer this prompt and I hope you don’t mind my off winded tangents. I will try to find a graphic to post with this posting as well, since I see so many nice graphics.. but alas I suck at finding nice graphics… I’ll use a lot of screen caps instead then.

Why do you watch anime? What do you get out of it? Think about this prompt in terms of escapism. What is it that you are escaping from? How does anime offer you an escape from your reality? Talk about the way in which anime distorts reality by offering up fan services of all types, fuzzy feelings, and happy endings. What is the appeal of anime? How do you balance reality with the unrealistic nature of anime? Does this make you feel like a coward for not being able to cope with reality? Or do you think it’s a healthy refuge from the stress and hard realities of daily life?

I am going to take this prompt apart and reply in separate paragraphs to it… I hope that this responses fits the Rabbit hole analogy. I am writing this response, while thinking of various instances of high school anime situations and adult livelihood aspects. Read more…
